Hosting platforms

Giving visibility to metadata

Hosting platforms are part of a group of affiliates known as ‘service providers.’ Though few in number, the organizations that host publisher content facilitate Crossref metadata in two key ways:

  1. Platforms deposit metadata–they register content– on behalf of publishers they host. This means that they are responsible for thousands [TK maybe a percentage??] of registered DOIs.

  2. Platforms show the world publisher metadata, and in context, to support authors, readers and search engines. For example:

Metadata in, metadata out

Hosting platforms are a good example of a not uncommon category: those that deliver metadata to Crossref as well as consuming it as output. (Publishers do this too sometimes!).

Why do this? Well, citation matching is one good example. Try the web search yourself if you’d like (this is one of a few ways to do it).

There are lots of reasons that any site hosting, searching or referencing content can benefit from [metadata delivery]((/services/metadata-delivery/). One benefit for Crossref is that users of metadata understand well its importance!

A shared community

Hosting platforms, of course, work with our publisher members, and help deliver Crossref services to our shared community.

When we plan a change or new service, for example, preprints, or in the case of our recent DOI display changes, we work to prepare hosting platforms, which will almost certainly get questions from publishers about it.

Of course, publishers moving from one platform to another is more common than it used to be. We aim to make those transitions as smooth as possible, so that, for example, deposits continue uninterrupted. We encourage members to let us know when a transition is underway!

Beyond publishers, platforms of course work with other service providers, such as submission systems. Libraries link to publisher sites on hosting platforms.

How platforms are connected with others in our shared community mirrors the flow of metadata and discoverability they help enable.
