Board election results 2017

Announcing new board members and thanks to those finishing their terms

A record 862 members voted in the most recent election. It was our first that involved an open call for expressions of interest, as well as our first contested election, as the nominating committee selected nine candidates from 25 to stand for six open seats.

In Singapore in November 2017 we welcomed the following new Board members:

  • F1000, Liz Allen, UK
  • MIT Press, Amy Brand, USA
  • OpenEdition, Marin Dacos, France
  • SciELO, Abel Packer, Brazil

The following organizations were re-elected:

  • AIP Publishing, Jason Wilde, USA
  • VGTU Press, Eleonora Dagiene, Lithuania

We thank the following organizations for their service:

  • American Psychological Association, Jasper Simons
  • IEEE, Gerry Grenier
  • Walter De Gruyter, Eric Merkel-Sobotta
  • Zhejiang University Press, Y.H. (Helen) Zhang

About board elections

Our board terms are three years, and one third of the board is eligible for election every year. There is a Nominating Committee consisting of three board members not up for re-election, and two Crossref members that are not on the board. The purpose of this committee is to review and create the slate each year for nominations to the board, ensuring a fair representation of membership. The slate of candidates for the election is usually announced in September and voting is done online or in person at our annual meeting in November each year.

The Nominating Committee meets to discuss the charge, process, criteria, and potential candidates, and puts forward a slate which is at least equal to the number of Board seats up for election. Crossref members are welcome to run as independent candidates as described in the by laws by getting the endorsement of ten members and contacting [Lisa Hart Martin](mailto:lhart@crossref.org. Each year members are notified of the election schedule but generally the election opens online in late September and election results are announced at our annual meeting in November.

In 2017 the Nominating Committee introduced two things for the first time: to issue an open call for expressions of interest; and to propose a slate with more candidates than seats available.
